They Are Watching You: Worship (by Laura Milner)

This story comes to us from a youth leader named Laura Milner. It was originally posted on her Blog (Strengthening the Chain)

They Are Watching You: Worship
I am excited to start my first blog series on Strengthening the Chain called “They are Watching You…” As of now it will be a three post series. However God could have other plans and I look forward to seeing what he does with it.
Let us often ask ourselves whether we are doing good or harm in the world. We cannot live to ourselves, if we are Christians. The eyes of many will always be upon us. Men will judge by what they see, far more than by what they hear. If they see the Christian contradicting by his practice what he professes to believe, they are justly stumbled and offended. For the world’s sake, as well as for our own, let us labor to be eminently holy. Let us endeavor to make our religion beautiful in the eyes of men, and to adorn the doctrine of Christ in all things. ~ J.C. Ryle
As believers in Christ the world is watching us and as leaders in our youth groups teens are watching us. And here’s my question; What are they seeing?

Sing to the LORD, you saints of his; praise his holy name. Psalm 30:4

What do the teens in your church see when you worship?

Do they see someone passionately worshiping their Savior or someone who is just filling space? Before i go any farther I have to say that I know there are many different worship styles and that not everyone raises their hands or gets on their knees during worship. What I am saying is, do these kids see you have an encounter with Christ when you worship? My husband is much more reserved then I, to put it mildly. However if you stand next to him when he worships you can feel and hear the passion in his voice when he sings. You see a man who is passionate about his Savior and worshiping him.
What do teens see when you worship?
Do you stand in the back where no one can see you? If so let me ask you, why? If you are there to be a leader why would you stand in the back? If you are there to be a leader then LEAD! One of my favorite things about the youth pastor i serve under (Kevin Lewis) and his wife Kali, is that they stand up front during worship and they sing and praise God with everything they have inside them. And I know the teens in our youth group are watching them. They are leading by example… you should too.
The teens are watching you. They watch you worship, and it is my hope and prayer that when they watch you, they would see Christ. How can they see Christ if you are standing in the back of the room? How will they know what it looks like to worship God? How are you pointing them to Christ if they can’t see you?
I really want you to think about those questions. If you’re going to be a leader, a mentor, a disciple maker, then  you NEED to be showing them… not just telling them. Actions will ALWAYS speak louder then words. Show them with your actions that you worship the one and only God. That Jesus Christ is worthy of your praise, that you have been saved by his grace and that you worship him with all your heart.

They are watching you… show them Jesus!
